How to Grow Kelvedon Wonder Peas

Sow outdoors from March to June, once the soil is workable. Earlier sowings may be possible in suitable conditions, while later sowings can extend your harvest into summer.

Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Peas prefer cooler growing conditions and benefit from a position protected from strong winds.

Prepare a fine seedbed and sow peas approximately 4–5 cm deep, spacing seeds around 5–7 cm apart in rows approximately 45 cm apart. Water the soil after sowing if it is dry.

Kelvedon Wonder is a relatively compact pea variety, but light support such as short pea sticks or netting can help keep plants upright and make harvesting easier, particularly in exposed gardens.

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially once plants begin flowering and pods start to develop. Dry conditions during flowering and pod formation can reduce your harvest.

Peas generally need little additional nitrogen fertiliser because, like other legumes, they can work with beneficial soil bacteria to fix nitrogen. Growing in reasonably fertile soil with good drainage will help plants establish successfully.

For a longer harvest, sow small batches every two to three weeks during the recommended sowing period, weather and soil conditions permitting.

When to Harvest Kelvedon Wonder Peas

Kelvedon Wonder peas are generally ready to harvest from early summer onwards, depending on when they were sown and the conditions in which they are grown. Pick the pods when they are well filled, green and plump, before the peas become overly large and lose some of their sweetness.

Harvest regularly to encourage plants to continue producing pods. Use one hand to hold the plant stem while picking with the other to avoid damaging the plant.

For the best flavour, enjoy freshly harvested peas as soon as possible after picking. Any surplus can be blanched and frozen, allowing you to enjoy the taste of homegrown peas well beyond the main growing season.
