How to Grow Bolivar Beetroot

Sow beetroot seeds outdoors from April to July, once the soil has warmed up. Earlier sowings may be possible under suitable conditions, while later sowings can provide roots for autumn harvesting.

Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Beetroot prefers soil that is reasonably free of stones and large clumps, allowing the roots to develop evenly.

Prepare a fine seedbed and sow seeds approximately 2–3 cm deep in rows around 30 cm apart. Beetroot seeds are naturally clusters of seeds, so several seedlings may emerge from a single seed.

Once seedlings are established, thin them to leave approximately 8–10 cm between plants, giving the roots enough room to develop. Young seedlings removed during thinning can sometimes be transplanted carefully, although they may not establish as reliably.

Water regularly during dry periods to encourage steady growth and help produce tender, good-quality roots. Inconsistent watering can lead to tougher roots or uneven development.

Grow in fertile soil and avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of the roots.

When to Harvest Bolivar Beetroot

Bolivar beetroot can generally be harvested around 12–16 weeks after sowing, depending on growing conditions and the size of root you prefer. For tender, sweet beetroot, lift the roots when they reach a useful size, often around golf-ball to tennis-ball size, or allow them to grow larger if desired.

Harvest carefully using a garden fork to loosen the soil around the roots before lifting. You can also pick a few young leaves as the plants grow, taking care not to remove too many from any single plant.

For a continuous supply of fresh beetroot, try sowing small batches every few weeks throughout the recommended sowing season.
