How to Grow Marketmore Cucumbers

Sow indoors from March to May for an early start, or outdoors from late May to June once the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed. Outdoor sowing is best suited to a warm, sheltered position.

Choose a warm, sunny location protected from strong winds. Marketmore can be grown outdoors in a suitable sheltered spot or under cover in a greenhouse or polytunnel.

Sow seeds individually in pots of seed compost, approximately 2 cm deep, placing each seed on its edge. Keep warm at around 20–25°C and maintain evenly moist compost. Once seedlings are established, grow them in good light and avoid chilling the plants.

Harden off indoor-grown seedlings gradually before planting outside once night-time temperatures are consistently above approximately 10°C and frost risk has passed. Space plants around 45–60 cm apart, depending on your growing method and available space.

Water regularly and consistently, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Aim to keep the soil moist without waterlogging it, and water around the base of the plant where possible.

Grow in fertile soil enriched with well-rotted organic matter. Once plants begin flowering and producing fruit, feed regularly with a suitable vegetable or tomato fertiliser according to the product instructions.

Marketmore plants can be trained up a sturdy trellis or support where suitable, helping save space and improve airflow. Alternatively, allow them to trail across the ground where space permits.

When to Harvest Marketmore Cucumbers

Marketmore cucumbers are generally ready to harvest from July onwards, depending on sowing date and growing conditions. Pick the fruits when they have reached a good size, are firm and have developed their characteristic dark green colour. Check plants regularly, as cucumbers can grow quickly during warm weather.

Use a sharp knife or clean secateurs to cut the fruits from the plant rather than pulling them off, which can damage the stems. Regular harvesting encourages plants to continue producing new cucumbers and helps prevent fruits from becoming oversized or developing a bitter flavour.

For the best taste and texture, harvest cucumbers while they are young and tender. Enjoy them fresh in salads, sandwiches and summer dishes, or refrigerate them until ready to use.
