How to Grow Broad Bean Super Aquadulce Seeds

Sow outdoors from October to November for an early crop, or from February to April for a spring sowing. In colder or exposed areas, spring sowing may be more suitable.

Choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Broad beans tolerate cooler conditions but benefit from protection against strong winds.

Sow seeds directly into the ground approximately 5 cm deep and 20 cm apart, with rows around 45–60 cm apart. Water the soil after sowing if it is dry.

Keep the soil reasonably moist during flowering and pod development, particularly during dry spells, to help encourage a good crop.

Tall plants may need support in exposed locations. Use stakes and string to help prevent wind damage.

Young plants can be vulnerable to mice and birds, while black bean aphids may affect growing tips. Check plants regularly and encourage beneficial insects into your garden.

When to Harvest Super Aquadulce Broad Beans

Harvest your broad beans when the pods are well filled and the beans inside have reached a good size, but are still tender. Pick regularly to enjoy the best flavour and texture.

Fresh broad beans are delicious steamed, added to salads, stirred through pasta or served alongside seasonal vegetables. Any surplus can be frozen for use later in the year.

For the best results, check your plants regularly as the pods develop, and adjust harvesting times according to growing conditions and your preferred bean size.
